Is it just here in central IL or is the weather really strange where you are? As far as I can remember, I don't remember such a long stretch of cool(er) weather in August. We've had temperatures in the 70's and 80's since last week, and according to the forecast, we should expect this for at least another week.
As far as I can recall, August is our hottest month in central IL. Temps usually range from the upper 80s all the way up to the mid-100s. I'm used to the sweltering heat that ripens my tomatoes, and makes me wish for fall. Instead we're getting temps that are more normal for mid-September. It definitely leaves me scratching my head and asking a lot of questions. Why are we getting such low temps? What does this mean? Is this indicative of the imminent polar shift the earth is overdue to have?
Obviously I have no answers, so as I'm waiting for answers, we've been working in the garden. We've been canning and preserving and freezing, filling our freezer and pantry with food that is the healthiest I can provide for my family. No spraying. No GMO foods.
We have a plan for next year's garden that runs along the idea of permaculture. We're working on the plans for its spring implementation now. The kids like the idea of less weeding! I do too.
